BAYOU BART
BY KALINA LAUER
3 – 13 MAY | THEATRE WORKS
Bayou Bart is part of our FRESH WORKS Program – designed to give the opportunity to early career artists to present their works
Set in the deep south in the late 1800s, Bayou Bart follows a classic narrative about a boy, Henri finding his way home, but upon doing so, he stumbles into a land he was never supposed to find and a fight he was never supposed to be a part of.
Sentient creatures from the bayou exist in a mysterious town governed by an enigmatic alligator yearning to be more than what they are. But, when animals go missing, and secret tradings downriver shroud the town in suspicion, all fingers… and claws start to point to the outsider Henri and escape from the illusive town seems impossible. Henri must gather his wits and discover what it truly means to be human and what separates animals from man.
IN CONVERSATION WITH KALINA LAUER
I had created this gorgeous green pinstriped 1800-style costume and had thought, “Now, what would an alligator look like in it?”
In this week’s backstage blog, we chat with writer/director Kalina Lauer about world-building, inspirations and the Bayou Bart team.

FACING UP
BY LYNDEN NICHOLLS
3 – 13 MAY | THEATRE WORKS
Get an insight into FACING UP, a vital piece of truth-telling theatre in this series of backstage interviews.
Episode One of the Facing Up Interviews is on our Backstage Blog now!
Facing Up is truth telling theatre regarding Australian Federal policy and attitudes towards First Nations people from federation to the present.
This is juxtaposed by a parallel story of Indigenous protest, a rarely acknowledged historical sequence; the creation of a nation at the expense of the disintegration of many others. Both histories contain direct quotations, summaries of government action and law.
