Mick created TAGG - The Alternative Gig Guide in 1979 with Helmut Katterl, the world's first real Street Magazine. He had been involved with his father's publishing business, Toorak Times and associated publications since 1972.  Mick was also involved in Melbourne's music scene for a number of years opening venues, discovering and managing bands and providing information and support for the industry.

I was walking down Acland Mall and Ben from Acland Cellars was walking toward me. He asked where I was off to and I replied The Vineyard for a crispy BBQ’d porchetta roll and he said, ” Have you seen what’s going on around the corner?”

“What Ben?”

“The crispy pork rolls are going off, have a look, there are lines of people waiting for their roll Mick!”

I continued down to The Vineyard to be told that my want was sold out and I did know I was cutting the timeline thin, so bought a sausage and a beer and wandered back wondering about this Vietnamese restaurant.

Ben was correct, there was a good number waiting, leaving and arriving so I thought I must give it a go.

From the first bite, it was a palate orgasm, the crispy pork has a sauce that is divine and the salad isn’t overfilled (one of my pet hates) with a more than ample serve of this delicious pork. I had chilli on mine as well and it was a perfect addition for me.

I am obviously not the first to review this easily overlooked gem in Barkly Street St Kilda, just opposite the Acland Mall, but it is a definite winner at a below-average price. Win-win!

Thanks for the advice, Ben!
