Delve into the artistic process and meanings behind the works of Kate Beynon and Louisa Bufardeci. Then get hands on in the master classes on offer at Linden New Art this winter.
Join Linden’s curator, Juliette Hanson in conversation with multidisciplinary artist, Kate Beynon. Find out more about Kate’s new solo exhibition, The Shapeshifter’s Hour, and the diverse interests that have inspired her work, including fashion, surrealism and the supernatural.
Kate Beynon is a Hong Kong-born, Naarm/Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist. Beynon is a 9-time Archibald finalist and Winner of the 2016 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize. Her work is included in the collections of the NGV, NGA, AGNSW, MCA, AGWA, AGSA. She has exhibited across Australia and internationally for more than twenty years and is represented by Sutton Gallery.

Louisa Bufardeci invites you to discussions on her most recent installation work, titled Figuring. The work consists of over 100 string figure attempts that the artist deciphered from a book published in 1906 by anthropologist Caroline Furness Jayne, titled String Figures: A study of cat’s cradle in many lands.
Artist Louisa Bufardeci has participated in major international exhibitions including the NGV Triennial in 2018, the Asia-Pacific Triennial in 2012, and the Asian Art Biennial in 2009. Her work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne and other cities in Australia and overseas. Bufardeci also contributes to her art community by teaching, volunteering as a guide to contemporary art at her local community centre and by mentoring young artists.

Learn the art of rug braiding with artist, Ilka White for a special-skills based master class. Ilka shares a wonderful way to weave old clothes into beautiful rugs using an off-loom, spiral braiding technique. Participants can bring their own material to recycle and find out what riches can come from rags.
Ilka White is an artist and teacher whose practice spans textiles, sculpture, cross-disciplinary collaboration and art-in-community. Direct engagement with the natural world and a love for ‘primary’ skills and world textile traditions inform the way she lives, makes, and teaches.

In this fun workshop for kids, artist Louisa Bufardeci will teach a range of string figures inspired by her current exhibition, Figuring. Kids are invited to come along and explore their creativity and learn string figure classics such as Cat’s Whiskers, Jacob’s Ladder and The Broom.
