Shane Warne Memorial Service
Wednesday 30th March 2022

Last night I attend the State Memorial Service for Shane Warne ‘a cricketer’ from Black Rock. Born on the 13th of September 1969, Shane was the son of Keith and Bridgette Warne, the brother of Jason, and the father of Brooke, Summer and Jackson; he passed away on the 4th of March 2022 in Koh Samui, Thailand. The memorial, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and televised, was as large as Shane himself and larger than his supporting achievement in Cricket. The service was for the people of Australia and the Global Community as a collective. The memorial went beyond cricket, football, family and friends, it was about, ‘please and thankyou,’ the service was about Shane the competitor, the King of Spin and ‘manners.’
Shane Warne was a man of true warmth with generosity of spirit. Sir Elton John has dedicated his song ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ to ‘Warnie’ and as the day turned to darkness we got out our mobile phones and shone light over Melbourne’s colosseum. The Great Southern Stand at the G will now be known as the ‘Shane Warne Stand’ for all eternity.
VALE Shane Warne
