Stranger Gallery and Studio announces a photography exhibition Coalescence by Sydney artist and photographer Rob Johnston.

Opening Night: 18th August 2022 at Stranger Gallery and Studio

Utilising abstraction and the philosophy of post-photography, Rob Johnstons’ Coalescence examines the relationship between the photographer and the camera and its lens, from the perspective of someone with a visual impairment.

Though he is not unique in being a photographer who is challenged by low vision, his intention is to find a way to present a lived experience using abstract techniques beyond what would be considered normal practice when contemplating photographic visual storytelling.

The introduction of the camera and photography into his life – a seemingly casual decision, could not have been more impactful.

He sees the idea of photography within his life as an opportunity to rebel against societal expectations, be a place of solace & quiet, a visual art medium, and in some ways a corrective lens to the world – providing clarity and detail that his own eyes cannot produce.

Exhibition Dates: 17th-28th August
Artist Talk: 12pm Saturday 20th August
Gallery Opening Times: 12-5pm Wednesday to Friday, 10am-1pm Saturday or by appointment
Location: Stranger Gallery and Studio 11b/60 Fitzroy St, St Kilda
