Four new innovative circus acts with wow factor

Gasworks Circus Showcase (formerly Showdown) is an unparalleled professional development opportunity for circus and physical theatre artists.

Adored by audiences since 2012, this display of immense skill is made possible by the daring and talent of independent Australian artists. Four acts shortlisted by an industry panel perform 15-minute excerpts of new works-in-development, and development awards will help them to take their works to new heights.

It is our pleasure to announce the Gasworks Circus Showcase 2023 finalists:

Act 1. “GO/NO GO” (GO/NO GO Collective): GO/NO GO fuses circus and theatre in a reimagining of the lives of the Mercury 13 – thirteen barrier-breaking pilots who in 1961 petitioned NASA to become the first women astronauts. It’s about these women, and why you don’t know their names. Welcome to the real space race.

Act 2. “Space Between” (13 Eggs): Space Between explores the evolving relationship of two characters through an absurdist lens. Filled to the brim with exciting circus skills, Space Between crosses the barrier between the characters and the audience, whose subtle journeys will leave you enthralled and puzzling over every step of the way home.

Act 4. “Hinterland: The Land Behind” (Turcia Circus): Wholesome, sweet and sincere with a healthy dose of chaos and absurdity. This intimate work combines physical theatre and circus to grapple with the question: how does one exist in this world? With beautiful acrobatics and endearing characterisation, this show will leave you with a smile on your face, even amid a mild existential crisis.

Act 3. “Three Four” (Jugglers of NICA): En masse juggling is rarely seen, especially in thoughtfully choreographed rhythmical explorations of this art form. What if you could see rhythm floating and bouncing through the air? Rhythm and juggling have more in common than you might realise. Forget everything you think juggling is about, and join us on a visually rhythmic journey for all the senses.
