A new Horizon in South Melbourne
Commissioned by the owner of Studio Incognito in South Melbourne, our largest light artwork this year is now in place.
Where the gallery’s stairs turn, a window opens over Port Phillip Bay, as if the one up the road had found its way inside. It stands 4.5 metres tall and 3.2 wide. As you climb, the horizon descends to meet you. Sky and water are lit apart, each drifting through the full spectrum in its own time. A crimson dusk over an inky ocean. Later, blue above green. It is never the same view twice.
The work is on permanent display, built into the studio’s architecture. If you’re visiting Incognito at Dorcas Street, you won’t miss it!
Design Spotlight: Comet
The idea was a linear light that’s both functional and decorative, made for kitchen islands, dining and boardroom tables, and reception desks. For the form, I looked up at the night sky and found the comet: a long, bright trail with a glowing head leading the way.
A slotted brass tube radiates light along its length. Hand-blown glass beads slide over it like the comet’s head. You choose the glass, the finish and the size.
Like everything we make, it’s made in Melbourne.
If you’d like a Comet before Christmas, now’s a good time to let us know.
October’s Open Studio
On the last Friday of every month, we throw the studio doors open. Drop in for a drink, a look around the workshop and a chat about what’s on the bench. Bring a project you’ve been dreaming up, or just your curiosity.
You’ll spot us from the corner. Our building has a brand new mural by Chuck Mayfield. It’s even better in person.
This Friday, 30 October, 4–6pm Friday 27 November, 4–6pm (our last for the year)
1/264 St Kilda Road, St Kilda. Entry via Farmer Street. No need to RSVP.
Warmly,
Ilan and the team
