With summer almost here, Port Phillip Council’s annual summer management campaign returns on 1 November 2026 to help keep our beaches, parks and public spaces safe, clean and fun for everyone.
From 1 November to 31 March 2027, an alcohol ban covers St Kilda beaches, foreshore reserves and parklands from Langridge Street to Thackeray Street. Opened and unopened containers of alcohol cannot be taken to this St Kilda precinct during the annual ban.
Alcohol can still be consumed responsibly in non-glass containers at other public spaces between midday and 8 pm, except during designated City-wide alcohol bans which will apply across Port Phillip from:
- New Year’s: 8 pm, 30 December to 12 midday, 2 January
- Australia Day: 8 pm, 25 January to 12 midday, 27 January.
Victoria Police will enforce the alcohol bans, supported by Council’s Local Laws Officers. Breaches can result in a $209 fine and alcohol may be confiscated.
Port Phillip’s vibrant hospitality scene is a great option to enjoy alcohol responsibly at licensed venues.
Port Phillip Mayor Alex Makin said the hotter and drier conditions forecast for summer meant it was even more important for everyone to play their part for a safe summer.
“Our incredible beaches, parks and public spaces attract thousands of residents and visitors throughout summer, especially our iconic St Kilda foreshore,” Cr Makin said.
“We were pleased that most people did the right thing last summer. By following a few simple rules, we can all keep our beaches and parks welcoming, safe and enjoyable for everyone.
“Whether you’re here for a swim, sunset, picnic or to visit our fantastic local venues, let’s work together for another great Port Phillip summer.”
Playing your part includes:
Binning it. Please use the extra public bins provided across beaches and parks. Council increases beach cleaning and bin collections in summer
Going glass-free. The year-round glass ban remains in place across foreshore beaches, reserves and parklands from Elwood to Port Melbourne. Bringing glass into these areas can result in a $209 fine and confiscation.
Checking before walkies. Always check signs or online information before taking your dog to the beach as dog off-leash restrictions change from 1 November to 31 March
Respecting water safety rules. Jet ski and personal watercraft users must comply with Victorian Government regulations. Dangerous or life-threatening behaviour should be reported to Triple Zero. Non-urgent matters can be reported to Victoria Police on 131 444. While Council doesn’t enforce these rules, we expect everyone to follow them.
